HERO PROFILE #19: Crusader Prime

Author's notes: The Chicago Tribune featured a front page article on Chicagoland RLSH on Saturday. The article had several quotes about Heroes in the Night and features a sidebar article about early prototype The Fox. The online version has a short video of the Chicago guys in action. Some great press to chase the winters blahs away!

HERO PROFILE #17: The Black Rat


Operates out of
: Sydney, Australia

Inspiration: "I first began thinking of being a RLSH after seeing the HBO documentary Superheroes."

Activities: "I use my RLSH alter ego to make sure broken street lighting in my area in a timely manner and that zebra crossings (crosswalks) and other street markings are maintained by the roads authority. (I do this) by highlighting these issues in the local media and by organizing local residents to report problems to me via social media."

Black Rat also does safety patrols on the streets of Sydney.

"I do these plain clothes so as not to scare people or have idiots try to fight me." He adds he is well trained in martial arts.

Future plans: "I hope to use the Black Rat as a platform to speak on issues such as law reform, drug and alcohol policy, and to send an anti-bullying message. As Gandhi said, 'be the change you want in the world."

HERO PROFILE #16: Knight-Hood


Operates out of
: Saint Petersburg, FL

Activities: Hands supplies to the homeless, reports crimes to police, writes pulp fiction for charity

Origin: After a string of misfortunes, he adopted the Knight-Hood persona in 1989

Also, Knight-Hood has a paperback fiction out.

HERO PROFILE #15: Thanatos

Eva Siu/ Citizen Heroes documentary

Operates out of: Vancouver, BC

Activities: Hands out supplies to the homeless, gathers evidence and reports crimes to police

Date of first patrol: Halloween

Origin story: After an officer told him that homeless people only had death to look forward to, Thanatos adopted a look that reflected the Grim Reaper.

Author's notes: I couldn't think of anyone better to feature as a Halloween Hero Profile than Thanatos. He has a somewhat creepy looking exterior, but is motivated by a heart of gold.

I have a chapter of Heroes in the Night that focuses on Thanatos titled "The Man in the Green Skull Mask." I document his status as a legend among Vancouver's large homeless population. HERO PROFILE #14: Evocatus

Author's notes: After asking Evocatus to sum up who he is and why he joined the Rain City Superhero Movement in Seattle, I thought I would just repost most of his response here.

From Evocatus: 

Hi, I’m Evocatus, or “Evo,” for short. I joined the RCSM candidacy program in September 2012, and became a junior ranking member shortly after. I had been a fan of Phoenix Jones for a while prior to that, and was fascinated by an actual team of people who chose to make an active difference in their community, by patrolling the streets of Seattle.
Having spent nearly a decade in the military, I was drawn to working in a team element, and had honestly missed that particular component once I’d left that life behind. This, combined with a strong sense of community service, seemed to make me a shoe-in for this line of volunteer activism.
Learning about each individual member, helped me understand why we’re all here. Most of us are in our mid-20’s to mid-30’s, married, children, work regular jobs, and live otherwise quite normal lives, which wasn’t what I’d expected. I think most of us presume anyone in the RLSH community is likely in their teens, live with their parents, and play video games for a living. The members of this team are quite real, and aren’t the normal caricatures of spandexed heroism we’re used to imagining. Simply put, we’re everyone. 
We’re you, reading this. We’re that guy that helps you jump start your car at work, or the woman that offers you to go ahead of her in line at the store. We are that kind person that offers a smile every morning at the bus stop, we are that person that kept the door open a few more seconds so you could get in from the rain, we are the volunteer at that one crisis clinic a friend you know went to.
I’ve since been patrolling at least once per week for over a year now, have done several blood drives, spoken at schools, worked with a camp for disabled children, conducted/participated in almost two dozen food & clothing handouts for the homeless, and I’m excited for the future of this team, and the things we may inspire others to also do.
The question often comes up, about why I joined the Rain City Superhero Movement. Being a part of this is simple; the tangible differences I make to my community keep me motivated, and in love with this city. The real questions I wonder are, “Why not,” and, “Why did I wait so long to start?”

HERO PROFILE #13: Emerald Fáel

Activities: Charity and humanitarian efforts

Legacy: Her son, Rouroni, was an RLSH. He died on May 25, 2012.

Author's notes: Emerald Fáel has a brief but memorable appearance in my book Heroes in the Night. I can say with no uncertainty that she is a hero to me. She is again joining Miss Fit's team, Missfits 4 Life, in raising money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital by participating in a Warrior Dash. (See yesterday's post, which includes a video and more info.)

I have a book appearance at Westfield Comics in Madison, WI on Saturday and will be donating $2.99 for each book I sell to Emerald Fáel's fundraising page, which is open for the next nine days or so.

HERO PROFILE #12: Blackbird

Author's notes: Tomorrow is a big day for me here in Milwaukee. I'm doing a hometown event to celebrate the release of Heroes in the Night. I'll be presenting my book at Boswell Book Company and then having an after party. Rumor is that local RLSH the Watchman and Blackbird might be around.

At the after party, I'll be doing a silent auction to benefit HOPE. Included in the items will be a nice print of the above photo taken of Blackbird by local photographer Paul Kjelland. It appears in the color photo section of the book.

HERO PROFILE #11: Dark Guardian

: New York City

Activities: Patrols, crime deterrence, homeless hand outs

Author's note: A founding figure of the modern RLSH movement, Dark Guardian has been patrolling the streets of various New York City boroughs for years. You can read more about him in a couple chapters of my book, Heroes in the Night.

Most recently, DG's been patrolling an area of Harlem with other members of his team where a transgender woman was beaten to death.

HERO PROFILE #10: Väktaren


Operates out of: Malmö, Sweden

Name Translation: Väktaren is Swedish for "Guardian"

Activities: Väktaren patrols criminal hotspots, looking to report crime to police and intervene in crimes in process.

Author's notes: I still hear about new RLSH all the time from all over the world. Today's Hero Profile comes from a tip from a Heroes in the Night Facebook fan, Xerxes Sockerstinn, who forwarded an article from a Swedish newspaper on Väktaren. The article reports that Väktaren, a comic book fan, was motivated to become a RLSH last month after he was mugged. The Swedish RLSH has found that his costumed appearance has frightened several Swedes, so he hopes the media exposure will garner some understanding of what he is trying to do.

Heroes in the Night has an entire chapter dedicated to different translations of the RLSH concept around the world.

HERO PROFILE #8: Moon

Comic book inspiration: Moon Knight

Activities: Hands out supplies to homeless, volunteers at animal shelters and children's hospitals, patrols

On patrolling: "My reason for going out on the street to keep an eye out is mainly because I feel that there are a lot of people who get away with pretty nasty things and are never held accountable for it. I want to change that. I am more of a outreach and charity hero, but I did patrol often up until the Dark Knight movie shooting in Colorado. After that I felt that my community would just keep calling police and fear a guy walking around dressed up like me. After talking with a police commander friend of mine, I decided to stop 'patrolling' until I get to San Francisco, where I can learn some new tactics from local heroes there as well as patrol with them."

Author's notes: Moon will be one of the panelists (along with the Watchman, Blackbird, Geist, Electron, and Crimson Catalyst) I'll have at Wizard World Comic Con today for my panel "Meet the Real Life Superheroes!" It's at 5PM, Room 42. If you're at the Con, hope to see you there.

HERO PROFILE #7: Crimson Catalyst

Inspiration: "I've always loved superheroes and comic books and when I heard stories of people doing it in real life, I knew I wanted to do it. I started training and putting a uniform together."

Author's notes: Easily identified by her crimson outfit and long, ginger hair, Crimson Catalyst will be one of the RLSH on a panel I am hosting a week from today at the Wizard World Chicago Comic Con. She'll join her fellow RLSH The Watchman, Blackbird, Electron, and Moon in discussing the RLSH lifestyle on Aug. 8. For more details on the panel, see the post previous to this one.

HERO PROFILE #4: DC's Guardian

Author's notes: Since this Thursday fell on the 4th of July, I thought it would be appropriate tp profile the star-spangled DC's Guardian. I asked him if he had a message he'd like to share with Heroes in the Night readers today and he sent me this exclusive 4th of July address:

  • “When in the course of human events. . .” 
    These words, written in an age of faith, courage, and resolve...for the generations that would follow.  237 years have gone by. Many lives have been lost to keep these words alive around the world. A beacon that-- whether you believe it or not-- still holds the wonder and imagination of those who do not want to be controlled...but to be self sufficient...self reliant...to succeed...or fail on their own...but on their own, nonetheless. Our founding fathers put down these ideals in an iron clad agreement, most losing all for the generations that would follow.9 died during the revolution. 5 captured by the British. 18 had their homes looted or burned down. Some lost everything they owned. 2 wounded in battle, 2 were the fathers of sons killed or captured…"Our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor." It was not just rhetorical hogwash. HERO PROFILE #3: Phoenix Jones

Activities: Crime patrols, charity events

Favorite food: Skittles

Author's notes: PHOENIX JONES! Opinion on the "Guardian of Seattle" differs sharply. Some say he is the best thing to happen to the RLSH movement, some say he is the worst. He's had many memorable controversies over the last couple years: May Day, Mutual Combat, and the Pepper Spray Incident (I witnessed that one first hand!) I think Phoenix Jones is passionate and dedicated to his mission, but he sometimes gets himself in over his head.

Phoenix Jones is featured in a couple chapters of my book. I presented his story in an objective way, and after reading about him, I'm sure you'll draw your own conclusions.

HERO PROFILE #2: Zetaman

Activities: Charity events and fundraisers, homeless hand outs, neighborhood patrols

Special power: Amazing comic book creations

Author's notes: I met Illya King (who used to be known as Zetaman) twice in my travels. He had a turbulent falling out with the RLSH community and he was candid enough to share his experiences with me. King continues to do charitable events sans costume and draws a superhero satire comic called Naked Man Comics, which often parodies Zetaman and his fellow RLSH.

I was surprised and delighted when King sent me a plug for my upcoming book...Naked Man Comics style. It's posted below and here's a link to it on his website.Thanks much to Illya King for creating a well threaded ink version of me and to his alter ego Zetaman who shared my adventure with me!

HERO PROFILE #1: The Watchman

Author's Notes: I couldn't start the new Heroes Profile with anyone but The Watchman. He's a local RLSH and the reason I got started on Heroes in the Night. I had heard a news blurb and thought the topic would be interesting to write on and so I began searching for a local RLSH. I found The Watchman. Over the last few years I've stayed in touch with him on a regular basis and have joined him on quite a few of his adventures, as well as seeing his team, The Challengers, evolve.
