HERO PROFILE #16: Captain BLACK
Aka: "Cap" for short
Operates out of: Savannah, Georgia
Activities: Writing, communication, community organization
About his name: BLACK stands for Brotherhood-Loyalty-Ability-Courage-Kindness
Quote: "I applaud real life superhero members using bill money and buying folks in major trouble some necessities. I've given away thousands to people in need.
'Saving' the world while broke introduces a challenging element to RLSH and other hunger activists. It's a real sacrifice to pay for items others need while your pockets are increasingly thin. Shouldering this sacrifice is as heroic as stopping crimes in progress or visiting school children.
As a largely working and middle class movement, regularly sacrificing to help others shows our hearts are in the right place. It's too easy to just spend on ourselves without helping the needy. I do what I can. Capt. Black is known as someone who'll give you something to tide you over. Again, I do what I can."
-from a recent essay
Author's notes: I interviewed Captain BLACK by e-mail quite awhile ago. I'm on his e-mail list and I always take time to read his essays and have listened to some of his blog talk radio shows as well. A good example is a recent column he wrote on artist, athlete, and activist Paul Robeson which you can read HERE. You can find out more about him and a link to his blog talk radio show at his website, www.captblack.info

For once I don't have anything negative to say. I've spoken with Cap Black and he's actually a really great guy. May I suggest finding out some information on another RLSH 'good-guy' that goes by the name of 'The Samaritan'?
ReplyDeleteWell- there's something confusing about that. I actually spoke with one Samaritan who is from Providence, RI. There is at least one, maybe two other Samaritans out there as well as Good Samaritan from Cali.
ReplyDeleteSo it gets confusing. Where is this particular Samaritan from?
His 'RLSHspace' page says he's from the Bronx. More of such can be found here: http://rlshspace.ning.com/profile/TheSamaritan
ReplyDeleteInfinite thanks Tea. infinite.
ReplyDeleteCaptain Black rocks! No costume, no gun, no agenda other then doing charitable works and trying to encourage others to do the same.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Poop Knife. I'm on Captain Black's mailing list as well, and always take time out of my day to read his articles. He's as wonderful a writer as he is a person, and I applaud him.
ReplyDeleteKind words from heroes and villains alike. That's no small feat in itself, Cap!
ReplyDeletethis is a great job. . .written about a good man. . .

Great guy.
ReplyDeleteCaptain Black is awesome. I'm glad he support the RLSH movement and is not overly judgmental about it.
ReplyDeleteAs stated before he is such a shining light in a bleak and meager organization and if only all the RLSH would take after him, there would be no want or need to even be an RLSV or even just someone who bashes the RLSH, bravo and keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteI'm unaware of any RLSH activity within Providence. If he is active, he must keep very well hidden.
ReplyDeleteI've donated to Captain Black's website. May I suggest that we donate to his endeavors to clean up the streets. He is truly an advocate for safety.

I'm glad that not everyone shares your narrow minded opinion Virus with regards to the RLSH.
ReplyDeleteThere is a difference between being narrow-minded and being realistic. Cap Black could be a great influence on current and newer members of the 'community' if it wasn't for the continuing filling up of the 'movement' with tough-guys and nutjobs.
ReplyDeleteand the fact that all of these RLSH continue to thrive and persist in the superhero persona, viewing themselves as some sorts of saviors, and this man here shows what it should be in its purest form. He stands alongside the RLSH, but in a correct fashion, he is just a man trying to do whats right, not some overly pontificating "my city screams for me" kind of crap, he is incredibly wise, down to earth, and understanding of the right, yes i said it, the right way of going about setting an example. He brings the community together, he doesn't try and fight a one man war on crime and homelessness. That is what makes the RLSH "movement" so bleak and meager, is because most of them cannot get over themselves enough to try and create unity and bring a community into what they are doing, they are just going out and pretending to fight themselves. I take nothing away from what Mr. Enzi does, he is absolutely to be commended, but in order to do the most good the RLSH need to start paying attention and learn.
ReplyDeleteAnd I want to state right now, I am not going to start a flame war on your page Tea, I am just clarifying my remark.

ReplyDeleteCapt. Black is listed on RealLifeSuperheroes.org
Cap is one of the wise philosophers of this community! Rock on, Buddy.
ReplyDeleteI'm not here to start a flame war either. My point Virus is that you have a habit of lumping the vast majority of RLSH in that "bleak and meager" category and very few of them in the "worthwhile" category. My PERSONAL belief is that you have the ratio backwards. You'll never catch me saying that all RLSH are class acts but you'll also NEVER catch me saying that the majority of them are going about things the wrong way. Sorry that you disagree with me but that's the way I see it. This is not a flame war. It's just my point of view.
ReplyDeleteMr. Jingles and Virus-
ReplyDeleteI think both of you have been very respectful in writing your opinions. I have no complaint and in fact I am very glad you both say what is on your mind here.
I am very happy we get to exchange our opinions here. We may not always agree, but we all share an interest in this. So, thanks for being willing to discuss.
